PORR drills

In the course of the hall extension H11 - H13A and the construction of a stairwell, PORR's foundation engineering department carried out extensive foundation engineering work on the Infineon Technologies Austria AG site. For the foundations of the new buildings, a total of 396 pcs. DN200 boreholes were sunk to around 17m and DN50 micropiles were installed. 82 of these are double-corrosion-protected micropiles, which take over the transfer of alternating loads. Some of the work in the existing structure required drilling in confined spaces. Appropriate equipment with a short carriage was used for this. A total of around 6,600 metres of micropiles were drilled.

Efficient drilling technology and comprehensive testing procedures. Two 20t Klemm crawler drilling rigs were used to drill the boreholes, which penetrated the deposited floodplain and river sediments of the nearby Gail using the cased auger drilling method. For each drilling unit, a 9t excavator was used to manipulate the drilling tool and a 15t Manitou to install the micropiles.

Two mixing pumping stations produced the cement on site to fill the annular space of the micropile bores in order to ensure a strong bond between the pile and the surrounding soil.

To verify the pile and soil conditions, 5 pcs. pile tension tests and 2 pcs. pile compression tests were carried out. An additional 8 piles were constructed for the pile compression tests. The test duration for each compression pile was estimated at 24 hours and a maximum load of 1,000 kN. This allows conclusions to be drawn about the long-term behaviour of the piles under compressive load in order to evaluate future expansion stages or additions to the existing structure.

Demolition, structural engineering and steel construction work took place in parallel during the drilling work. The constant coordination and the professional work process between those involved in the specialised civil engineering departments and the Carinthia branch contributed to the successful completion of the project.
